View Finder No. 11
a photo of ‘Winter Evening’ by Vilhelms Purvītis, master of landscapes and the father of Latvian painting
Welcome back to View Finder an additional offering for paid subscribers of Journeys Beyond Borders where every other Monday I feature a single photograph, from somewhere between Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and explain why it matters.
This week, I have chosen a photo I took of an oil painting by Vilhelms Purvītis (1872–1945). ‘Winter Evening’ hangs in Rīga’s excellent Museum of Art and is instantly recognisable as the work of Latvia’s favourite landscape artist. But how else is he remembered today?
